Career Values
Career values may seem like a nice extra to consider in your academic and career decisions, but they are critical to satisfaction and happiness. Whether you realize it or not, values influence every career decision that you make. They, in fact, are becoming more important as job choices become more varied and as attitudes towards work and personal life evolve in the 21st Century.
We have created a values sort to help define what is most important to you in a career and at work. You will sort through many different value statements and choose your top values.
Examples:
- Money
- Very important to the life style you want?
- Need to support myself but not most important thing?
- Geographical Location
- Want to be close to family and friends?
- Ready for new places and a big change?
- Competitive Work Environment
- Need the challenge of being a winner?
- Enjoy working together on mutual goals?
Students might find that the values sort leads to interesting conversations with their parents. Parents may assume that they know their children's values about factors such as job security, sense of accomplishment, or opportunities for advancement but your views may surprise your parents
Adults may want to take a look at how your career is meeting your personal career values from time to time. Think of it as a values check up. The world is changing, industries and careers are changing and you have changed. What is important to you now? Is your current job meeting most of your needs? Can you make changes to ensure that your career is still satisfying and rewarding? Do you need to consider making major changes or are there small changes that can make you happier at work?
We encourage you to discover what is important to you as well as how to make college and career decisions that support your values. The more you know about yourself, the more empowered you will be to make choices that are best for you.
